Writers feel an overwhelming sense of joy when they complete and publish their projects, especially after all the edits, rewrites, and, most importantly, overcoming writer’s block.

Internal and external factors, such as stress or comparison, can contribute to a writer’s ability to start and finish a story. These factors can also cause writers to procrastinate or stall their writing because of their fears and insecurities.

If you’re currently facing writer’s block or know of anyone who is, here are five ways to avoid it below:

Find different places to work.

Breaking routines can be difficult for writers, especially when they find the ideal location to do their work. Working in comfortable spaces plays a significant role in the writing process because it helps you gather your thoughts and allows your imagination to run free. But, if you’re having difficulty being productive, switch up your workspace.

If you like to write at home or the library, try working at a park or local coffee shop. These spaces can get you out of your comfort zone and are a great way to get inspiration from your environment and see people interact with others.

Take a break.

Writing is a time-consuming process that can lead to immediate burnout. One of the best remedies to overcome writer’s block is to take a break to rest. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for doing so. Investing your time in other creative activities like reading, drawing, or playing an instrument can motivate you to get back to writing.

Ignore and challenge your inner critic.

While working, several thoughts can roam through your mind. Some can be positive, while others can be negative–the latter can stop you from accomplishing your goals. Facing your inner critic head-on will help you get out of a negative mindset. Try to combat these debilitating thoughts with positive ones so they can give you the motivation you need.

Ask for help.

While writing is usually a solitary activity, having a helping hand is always good. A mentor or writing friend can help you get out of your head and figure out what to write next. Sometimes, we believe we can do it on our own, but that way of thinking is detrimental to our growth.

Asking for feedback is essential. Advice and support from others can help you identify problems in your work, learn different writing techniques, and develop new story ideas.

Just write.

The best way to avoid writer’s block is to just write. This tip sounds like a no-brainer, but it can be hard to do when you’re not in an ideal creative space. If you spend time worrying about whether your writing is good or bad, you will stay in a constant state of judgment and despair.

What you write is rooted in your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The beauty of this journey is that someone can connect or relate to an aspect of your story. Putting pen to paper or hand to keyboard will prevent writer’s block from constantly rearing its head.
